SONORA — November 2, 2026. Sonora’s Parks and Trails page says a special-event permit is generally required for events in municipal parks, with a limited exception for small private gatherings of 25 people or fewer that do not set up equipment or structures.
Why the exception is narrow
A small birthday picnic without event structures may qualify for the city’s exception, but public events, amplified sound, vendors, tents or other equipment can change the rules. Organizers should confirm their circumstances with the city before announcing an event.
Parks to consider
The city’s guide lists Coffill Park with its tree-lined picnic area, Woods Creek Rotary Park with a playground and barbecue tables, Grigsby Park for young children, and Prospector Park featuring historic mining equipment.
Who to contact
Sonora’s Public Works Department maintains parks and municipal streets. The city provides 209-532-2922 for questions about maintenance, permits and appropriate city contacts.
