SONORA — November 7, 2026. University of California Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners are inviting residents to an Open Garden Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Demonstration Garden, 251 South Barretta Street, on the Cassina High School campus.
This month’s subject
Gardeners will discuss hoop houses, simple covered structures that can protect plants from cold weather, wind and pests when properly designed. The presentation is especially timely as foothill households prepare gardens for winter conditions.
Bring a soil sample
Master Gardener volunteers plan to offer soil texture and pH testing to visitors who bring a sample. Free compost will be available to residents who bring containers, bags or a vehicle suitable for transporting it. Guests should verify how the compost will be loaded rather than assume tools and labor are provided.
Seasonal gardening resource
Sonora’s Open Garden Days are generally held on the first Saturday of the month from February through November, including rainy days when conditions permit. This session offers an opportunity to ask practical questions about local soil and growing conditions. The source does not guarantee a particular amount of compost per household, and supplies may vary.
